Background of the Study

Disasters, both natural and man-made, pose a significant challenge to healthcare systems worldwide. In low-resource settings like Nigeria, the capacity to respond to mass casualty incidents is often inadequate, resulting in poor outcomes for victims (Oluwadamilola et al., 2023). Nurses, as essential healthcare providers, must be well-prepared to handle the immediate care needs of disaster victims, ensuring triage, first aid, and stabilization before further medical intervention.

Despite the critical role of nurses in disaster response, many hospitals in Nigeria, including Niger State Specialist Hospital, lack structured disaster preparedness programs (Oluwaseun & Bello, 2023). This study aims to assess nurses’ preparedness for disaster response at Niger State Specialist Hospital, focusing on their knowledge, training, and ability to manage emergency situations effectively.

Statement of the Problem

Disasters, including floods, fires, and road accidents, are common in Nigeria, yet the preparedness of healthcare workers, especially nurses, remains insufficient (Akintoye et al., 2023). The absence of disaster management training programs and protocols in many hospitals compromises the quality of care provided during such events. This study seeks to identify the gaps in disaster preparedness among nurses at Niger State Specialist Hospital and assess the factors that contribute to these gaps.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the level of disaster preparedness training among nurses in Niger State Specialist Hospital.
  2. To evaluate nurses' knowledge and skills in managing disaster-related emergencies.
  3. To identify barriers affecting nurses' preparedness for disaster response.

Research Questions

  1. What is the level of disaster preparedness training among nurses at Niger State Specialist Hospital?
  2. How knowledgeable and skilled are nurses in managing disaster-related emergencies?
  3. What factors hinder nurses’ preparedness for disaster response at the hospital?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nurses' level of disaster preparedness training is not significantly high.
  2. Nurses’ knowledge and skills in managing disaster-related emergencies are not significantly adequate.
  3. There are significant factors hindering nurses’ preparedness for disaster response in Niger State Specialist Hospital.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on nurses working in emergency, trauma, and general medical units at Niger State Specialist Hospital. Limitations may include variations in disaster preparedness training and differences in exposure to disaster events among nurses.

Definitions of Terms

  • Disaster Preparedness: The state of readiness for healthcare professionals to respond effectively to disasters.
  • Mass Casualty Incident: An event that results in a large number of injured individuals overwhelming the hospital’s capacity.
  • Triage: The process of determining the priority of patients' treatments based on the severity of their conditions.
